Every input decision on a farm — seed, fertilizer, chemical, irrigation — starts from one number: how many acres you're actually working. Get that wrong by even a few percent and every rate calculation downstream is wrong with it.
Walk or drive the boundary
The most reliable phone-only method is to record a live GPS track around the field edge, on foot for smaller plots or in a truck/ATV for larger ones. Keep a steady line along the true edge — the app closes the polygon and computes area and perimeter the moment you finish.
Handling irregular edges
Few fields are clean rectangles. Ponds, tree lines, rock outcrops and easements all cut into usable acreage. Recording the actual boundary (rather than a rough rectangle) captures those cutouts automatically, instead of forcing you to subtract them by hand.
Cross-check before you trust it
- Wait for a strong GPS fix before starting the walk — a cold fix can bow the first few points off the true line.
- Compare the result against the deed or FSA acreage on file.
- Re-walk any boundary that's off by more than a few percent rather than assuming the old number was wrong.
