Where a total station still wins
Under tree canopy, next to tall buildings, or anywhere satellite visibility is poor, a total station's line-of-sight measurement stays reliable when GPS signal degrades. It's also the tool of choice when you need relative accuracy between close-together points down to millimeters.
Where a GPS rover wins
Open sites, large parcels, and jobs where absolute position (not just relative position) matters are GPS rover territory — no backsight required, and one person can cover ground a total station crew would need hours for.
Deciding on the day
- Check canopy and obstruction before you load the truck — it's the single biggest factor.
- For boundary retracement across a large parcel, GPS usually covers ground faster.
- For tight infrastructure work — pipe inverts, structural offsets — the total station's precision is hard to beat.
